Galaxy Evolution Explorer Ultraviolet Spectroscopy and Deep Imaging of Luminous Infrared Galaxies in the European Large-area Iso Survey S1 Field

چکیده
The European Large-Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) S1 field was observed by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) in both its Wide Spectroscopic and Deep Imaging Survey modes. This field was previously observed by the Infrared Space Observatory, and we made use of the catalog of multiwavelength data published by the ELAIS consortium to select galaxies common to the two samples. Among the 959 objects with GALEX spectroscopy, 88 are present in the ELAIS catalog and 19 are galaxies with an optical spectroscopic redshift. The distribution of redshifts covers the range . The selected galaxies have bolometric IR luminosities 0 ! z ! 1.6 (deduced from the 15 mm flux using ISOCAM), which means that we cover a wide range of 10 ! log L ! 13 IR galaxies from normal to ultraluminous IR galaxies. The mean (j) UV luminosity (not corrected for extinction) amounts to for the low-z ( ) sample. The UV slope b (assuming ) correlates b log lL p 9.8(0.6) L z ≤ 0.35 f ∝ l 1530 , l with the GALEX color if the sample is restricted to galaxies below . Taking advantage of FUV NUV z ! 0.1 the UV and IR data, we estimate the dust attenuation from the IR/UV ratio and compare it to the UV slope b. We find that it is not possible to uniquely estimate the dust attenuation from b for our sample of galaxies. These galaxies are highly extinguished with a median value . Once the dust correction is applied, the A p 2.7 0.8 FUV UVand IR-based star formation rates correlate. For the closest galaxy with the best quality spectrum, we see a feature consistent with being produced by a bump near 220 nm in the attenuation curve. متن کاملOPTICALLY FAINT COUNTERPARTS TO THE ISO-FIRBACK 170μm POPULATION: THE DISCOVERY OF COLD, LUMINOUS GALAXIES AT HIGH REDSHIFT
We present Keck spectroscopy and UKIRT near-IR imaging observations of two 170μm-selected sources from the ISO-FIRBACK survey which have faint counterparts in the optical, and r − K ∼ 5. Both sources were expected to lie at z > 1 based on their far-infrared, submillimeter and radio fluxes, assuming a similar spectral energy distribution to the local ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp 22...
متن کاملThe Nature of Faint 24 Micron Sources Seen in Spitzer Space Telescope Observations of Elais-n1
The Spitzer Space Telescope has undertaken the deepest ever observations of the 24 m sky in the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS-N1) field, with the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) instrument, as part of GOODS Science Verification observations. We present completeness-corrected extragalactic source counts down to 24 m flux densities of 20 Jy (30% completeness), a factor of 10,000 more ...
متن کاملStudying Distant Infrared–Luminous Galaxies with Spitzer and Hubble
New surveys with the Spitzer space telescope identify distant star–forming and active galaxies by their strong emission at far–infrared wavelengths, which provides strong constraints on these galaxies’ bolometric energy. Using early results from Spitzer surveys at 24 μm, we argue that the faint sources correspond to the existence of a population of infrared–luminous galaxies at z & 1 that are n...
متن کاملUltraviolet Number Counts of Galaxies from Swift UV/Optical Telescope Deep Imaging of the Chandra Deep Field South
Deep Swift UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT) imaging of the Chandra Deep Field South is used to measure galaxy number counts in three near ultraviolet (NUV) filters (uvw2: 1928 Å, uvm2: 2246 Å, uvw1: 2600 Å) and the u band (3645 Å). UVOT observations cover the break in the slope of the NUV number counts with greater precision than the number counts by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope ...
